This January, Lens on Lebanon brought a photography workshop to Rashidieh
Palestinian refugee camp in south Lebanon. The six amateur photographers from
the camp, with Mahmoud Zeidan and Richard Bajornas as workshop
facilitators, chose to focus their work along the twin themes of
'Inheritance' and 'Legacy'.
In the context of Rashidieh, the group explored the characteristics of
the life they were born into - their history and identity, the present-day
issues it has produced, and the role this all plays in shaping their
future.
The workshop used digital photography and accompanying written narrative
as tools for personal examination and explanation of topics agreed upon by
the group, and explored individual approaches and artistic choices
inherent in producing a striking, visual narrative.
Emphasized was the important role of documentary photography to illustrate
chosen themes and how they shape daily lives, with examples drawn from a
wide array of international photographic essays.
What the group wished was to create a photographic exhibition within the
camp and to create a multimedia presentation, including their photographs
and spoken narratives.
