The aim of this workshop was to equip the teachers at the Insan School with the information and tools to help young people understand how the media and the use of images work. Observing the messages and how the media and images affect our everyday lifestyle and interactions with others.
Media stereotypes are inevitable, especially in the advertising, entertainment and news industries, which need as wide an audience as possible to quickly understand information. Stereotypes act like codes that give audiences a quick, common understanding of a person or group of people - usually relating to their class, ethnicity or race, gender, sexual orientation, social role or occupation.
The Insan School in Sin El Fil was established to assist the children of domestic workers and refugee youth by providing a center where these young people can make up for gaps in their education and eventually be accepted into Lebanese schools. Many of these youth are subjected to racism and prejudice within the Lebanese society and because of the variations of ethnicities in the school there is also internal divisions.
During the four-day workshop the teachers were introduced to various media techniques as creative exercises to incorporate into the classroom. While the students were engaged in the process the teachers were asked to document their observations with digital cameras.
